Obituary for Caroline Mauldin Elliot

Always proud to be a native Charlottean, Caroline Mauldin (Ann) Elliot was born here on September 30, 1920, and died here on April 19, 2018. The second of five children of Rob and Dorothy Mauldin, Ann took from both parents a life-long love of family and people, and a commitment to serve her community. She attended A.G. Junior High School, and Central High School in Charlotte, where Ann met her sweetheart, John Drew (Pinky) Elliot, and they graduated together in 1938. Pinky attended UNC where he played football, and Ann attended Queens in Charlotte, both graduating in 1942. Pinky and Ann married on January 30, 1943, after Pinky had joined the Navy to fight in WWII. Pinky and Ann had two "war babies," JoAnn and Caroline. After the war, the new family commenced their life together, and added two more children, Johnny and Hoppy. As Pinky started his career in accounting, Ann raised her babies and ran the family, and started her career in volunteerism. Her involvement with her girls in Girl Scouts took her from troop leader to president of the local Scouts to representative on the national level. During the same period, Ann became active in St. Martin's Episcopal Church, where she ultimately was elected to the Vestry, one of the first Vestrywomen in the Diocese of North Carolina. Around 1976, Ann, along with others from her church, founded a meals program for "shut-ins" - those who were home-bound, and did not have the ability or means to go out for food. The program grew from a neighborhood service to a city-wide meals-on-wheels program, named Friendship Trays, which is thriving today, providing daily meals to over 700 residents of Charlotte. Over the years, Ann won many awards for her service, including the Outstanding Alumna award from Queens College, whose tribute described her life well: "Her deep concern for others is demonstrated in every thing she does." Along the way, Ann lost her husband of 43 years, Pinky, in 1986 and her daughter, Caroline, in 2007. Through it all, Ann served and supported her first loves-her family and numerous wonderful friends, including those with whom she lived her last 19 years at Sharon Towers. Ann is survived by three of her children, JoAnn Davis, John Drew Elliot, Jr. and wife Sandra, and Robert Mauldin (Hoppy) Elliot and wife Suzanne Reynolds; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; her sister, Elizabeth Mauldin Fulenwider, and multitudes of nieces, nephews and friends. Hers was an extraordinary life well-lived. A memorial service will be held at St. Martin's Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018. Friends may send memorials to Friendship Trays, St. Martin's Episcopal Church, Queens University, Sharon Towers, or Kanuga Episcopal Conference Center.
