Curious about the world and a life long learner, he enjoyed scouting, earning the rank of Eagle Scout.
As an outstanding student he received a scholarship to Pfeiffer College where he met the love of his life and future wife, Jo Ann Williams. Throughout his college years, Martin worked various jobs to supplement his scholarships. In gratitude to Pfeiffer University, Martin and Jo Ann endowed a need based scholarship for students from Iredell and Cabarrus counties.

He served as a Naval Officer and dentist at the Green Cove Springs Naval Base, Florida.
In the early 1960's Martin set up an orthodontic practice in Charlotte. Later, he served as President of both the UNC Orthodontic Alumni Association and the North Carolina Orthodontic Society. During his career he treated thousands of patients in the Charlotte area. He loved children and creating beautiful smiles on his patients using both his skill and personality.
Martin was most proud of his family. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, who shared his faith, values, wisdom and talents with his family and others. In his later years, he relished reminiscing about his youthful adventures with his grandchildren. He enjoyed encouraging others and never lost his sense of humor.
In his free time he and Jo Ann enjoyed tennis, bridge, traveling, and were loyal UNC basketball fans. They enjoyed their retirement years dividing their time between Charlotte and Sarasota, Florida. He was a long time member of Christ Lutheran Church and Quail Hollow Country Club.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Southminster and the Hospice team for their outstanding care and kindness. They would also like to extend their gratitude to long time family physician, Dr. James Villier, and caregiver, Janet Wash.
