Obituary for Fred Peterson, II

Fred Peterson II (Pete), 77, died November 18, 2017, at Levine Hospice House in Huntersville, NC. A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Saturday, November 25 at 10:00 AM. The service will be officiated by Pastor Brenda Caldwell at Greater Temple Baptist Church, 216 Bradford Drive, Charlotte, NC 28208. A repast and fellowship will immediately follow the service in the church dining hall. A final interment will follow in Darlington, SC.
Pete was born July 7, 1940, in Hartsville, SC to Amanda Peterson and Cicero Gilmore.
Our beloved Pete personified kindness and integrity and always rendered words of encouragement to friends and colleagues. Pete spent his youth and teenage years in Philadelphia, PA. He joined the U.S. Army in 1957 and served his country for over 8 years in the Medical Corps Division. In this endeavor, he toured from Germany to Texas to San Francisco. After his military service, Pete remained in the San Francisco Bay Area, employed in the medical field and Muni Transit System. During his 30 year tenure at Muni, he advanced from a transit operator to senior claims investigator.
Pete was passionate about civil rights and politics. His passion and zealous advocacy for human and employee rights led him to become a well-respected leader serving as President of the San Francisco Muni Transport Workers Union Local 200. He officially retired from the Muni Transit System in 1995 but never retired from fighting for the rights of others. He was also a proud member of Prince Hall Grand Lodge F. & A.M. State of California, Incorporated. He also enjoyed sports, fishing, reading the newspaper, acknowledging birthdays through cards, and spending time with family and friends. Most importantly, he was a stickler for the advancement of education or People of Color.
In 2006, Pete and his wife Antonette relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina to be closer to his beloved mother and family.
Pete is preceded in death by his parents and brother Eugene Peterson.
Pete leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife Antonette; his daughter Angela Flemming (Barron); special love daughters Dawn, Desiree, Dominique, and Kemba; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank Gilmore (Vikki); and three sisters, Azalee Brown, Edith Cross, and Barbara Warner; as well as a host of church family and friends.
