Obituary for Joan Belk

Mrs. Joan Belk, 79, of Charlotte, born in Iredell County on June 26, 1938, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018. Joan was the daughter of the late Horace Henderson Ervin and the late Edna Perry Harwell.
Joan Belk personified the true community servant, as a teacher, as a leader in the political arena and as a dedicated community volunteer. She served as a member of the Greensboro Junior Women's Club and under Joan's executive leadership, it was named the outstanding junior club in the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Her warm personality and openness to ideas always placed her in leadership positions. We will miss these innate qualities and her forever friendship.
Joan retired from the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System in 2003. She was passionate about education and demonstrated this in the classroom as well as the many positions she held in Business Education. Joan held the office of President of the Southern Business Educators Association and President of the NC Business Educators Association. Joan also held the office of Legislative Chairperson of the National Business Educators Association.
Education was not her only passion, she strongly supported the ideals of the Democratic Party. Joan was not an armchair party member. Joan held the office of President of the Democratic Woman's Association of Mecklenburg County as well as Treasurer of the Democratic Woman's Association of North Carolina. In 2010, Joan was the recipient of the Jim Pierce award which is bestowed to the Democrat of the Year by the Mecklenburg Democratic Party.
Funeral Services to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Providence Baptist Church. Interment will follow directly after in the Wingate City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at J.B. Tallent Funeral Service.
Joan's husband , George A. Belk, preceded her in death in September 2009. She is survived by her son, David Henderson Belk, and her daughter, Susan van Soestbergen and husband, Gus, her grandson, Joseph Zachary Mason and step granddaughter, Jessica van Soestbergen.
Serving as pall bearers will be Michael Deutsch, Tom Winslow, Perry Wayne Brown, Col (R) Jack Tobin, Scott Peterson and Steve Grace.
The family would like to express appreciation to the nursing staff and Hospice team at Southminster's Embrace Care.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that Donations be made to the ALS Association North Carolina Chapter, 4 N. Blount Street, Suite 200, Raleigh, NC 27601 or a charity of your choice.
