Obituary for Nan Dixon Rand

Nan Dorsey Rand died peacefully in Charlotte, NC on June 8, 2017. She was born in Henderson KY on September 15, 1928 to Bessie Baskett Dorsey and John Lloyd Dorsey. She was a valedictorian of Henderson County High School and graduated from the University of Indiana at Bloomington after studying for her first two years at Randolph-Macon Women’s College. She worked as an illustrator before marrying her husband of 51 years, Julian A Rand, Jr. and relocating with his career from Louisville, KY to Winston-Salem, NC in 1967. As a homemaker and mother, she pursued her enthusiasms for tennis, gardening, bridge, and her faith. She achieved Master Gardener certification and was very active at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem including service as a deacon, was Moderator of the Presbyterian Women, taught Sunday School and received the Life Member Award. In addition to other volunteer roles including Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity, she devoted enormous love and energy to her family. We are grateful for her life of 88 years. Her courage and optimism in her later years were inspiring.
Nan is predeceased by her husband, Julian Arey Rand, Jr.; two sisters, Elizabeth Dorsey Sullivan and Nell Baskett Dorsey; and a brother, John Lloyd Dorsey, Jr. She is survived by her children: Elizabeth Rand Jones Erdle and son-in-law George Erdle of Charlotte, NC; Martha Rand Keller and son-in-law Steven Keller of Northport, NY; Julian Arey (Jack) Rand, III and daughter-in-law Martha Rand of Charlotte; and grandchildren Larsen Rand Jones, Anne Christian Jones, Nancy Dixon Jones, David Wallace Rand, and Charles Edward Rand; and by her twin sister, Martha Dorsey Hodge of Henderson KY, as well as many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 AM on Monday, June 12 at Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church with reception to follow. With deep gratitude, the family wishes to recognize the support of Nan’s caregivers at Southminster Retirement Community, especially Shamara Coates and Athena Stowe, and value their contributions during her journey. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County, 1023 W. 14th Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27105-5811.
