Mr. Bendel died February, 19, 2010 at The Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital with his wife Ruth by his side. He was born April 8, 1925 in Chicago, IL, son of the late Hassie Blackburn Bendel and William R. Bendel.
He was a 1949 graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII for 2 ½ years in the South Pacific as a radio operator on a B24 Bomber Crew in the 13th Air Force.
His early employment was with White Consolidated Industries in Cleveland, OH, serving in the managerial level. His work took him to many cities and when he came to Charlotte in 1966 he decided to stay and move his parents also, taking care of them at home until their deaths. He went to work in 1967 for Merrill Lynch as an account executive for the next 17 years, retiring in 1984.
On September 9, 1989 he married his bride Ruth Glass Kluttz and they were together for almost the next 21 years. They met through their love of roses.
Besides fishing, his primary hobby was growing roses, at one time caring for over 250. His peers considered him one of the best growers in the Carolina District, winning many awards. He served as a judge, a consulting roserian for the American Rose Society, and was voted outstanding judge in the Carolina District.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his brother, Richard B. Bendel and wife, Linda of Alamo, TX; nephews, Richard B. Bendel, Jr. and Michael L.
