Having fought the good fight, Ellie departed this life July 5th, 2010 and went to a far, far better place.

Born in Charlotte to Dr. William Mason Strong and Lina Montgomery Strong, she was the 5th of 5 children. She graduated from Central High School, Class of ’42 and attended UNC-G.

She married Albert M. Barkley and had 3 children; Michael, David, and Lisa. Her second marriage was to Marcel W. Courvoisier.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings as well as her husband, Marcel and son, David.

Ellie was active in the Presbyterian Church all of her life. At age fifteen, she taught vacation bible school at First Presbyterian, moved to Avondale Presbyterian, then to Quail Hollow Presbyterian. For 35 years, Ellie served in many capacities at QHPC. She was an Elder and Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Stephen Minister Organizer, and she held nearly every office there was with the Presbyterian Women, receiving a PW Lifetime Achievement Award. She enjoyed playing in the Bell Choir until her first stroke took away her ability to concentrate.

She was an avid seamstress and sewed all her life; knitting, smocking, and quilting. Most recently she helped organize the Prayer Shawl Ministry at her church.

Ellie was also active in the Daughters of the American Revolution for 50 years and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Easterling and her family, Richard, Rachel, and Rebecca Easterling; Ellie’s son, Michael Barkley and his children, Christopher Barkley, Meredith Hartsell and husband, Brandon, and Allyson Barkley. Meredith and Brandon Hartsell have Ellie’s only great grandchild, Braxton Hartsell. Ellie was anticipating another great grandbaby in September.

Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday evening at Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church on Park Road from 6:00-8:00 P.M. The memorial service to honor
