RUSSELL  HENRY  ENGLE  

October 16, 1924 - May 2, 2009

 

Russell Henry Engle died May 2nd, 2009 at his home in Plantation Estates in Matthews, North Carolina.  He was born October 16, 1924 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Russell and Virginia Engle at St. Peter’s Hospital.

Mr. Engle is a graduate of Old Central High School, of the class of 1942.  He graduated from Davidson College in 1948.  His career began in sales at Pound and Moore where he worked with his father for a short time.  Dorsey’s Furniture expanded their sales to office furniture and Mr. Engle provided leadership and developed their sales department.  Walker-Engle and Associates offered an opportunity to pursue his own business and Mr. Engle for many hears provided service to the Charlotte community.
 

A life long active member of St. John’s Baptist Church, Mr. Engle served over 25 years as a deacon, being recognized as a deacon emeritus.  He filled a number of leadership positions, including a Sunday School teacher for the junior high students and a secretary for the youth department.  He was a member of the Durden Sunday School class and enjoyed the times of fellowship and study.

 

Mr. Engle is a member of the original Friendship Tray Board.  He was active in the Charlotte Eastern Lion’s Club Chapter.  The friendship and service activities of the organization provided a way for him to express his love and concern for others.

 

Henry is preceded in death by is parents.  He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Patricia (Pat) Weller Engle, daughter and son-in-law, Alice Engle Blanton and Dr. Robert H. Blanton and their children Laura and Robbie of Bristol, Tennessee; son and daughter-in-law Russell (Rusty) Leslie Engle and Christy Seay Engle and their children Lauren, Russell, and Savannah of Matthews, NC; and son and daughter-in-law James Stuart Engle and Sara Woodruff Engle and their children Kyle, Claire, and Emily also of Matthews, NC.  Also surviving are two brothers, Dr. Jim Engle of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and Retired Colonel Donald Engle of Warner Robbins, Georgia and cousins Anne Bourne of Richmond, Virginia; Ann and Beth Askew of Nellysford, Virginia, Charlotte and Jack Bailey of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Inez Arant of Matthews, North Carolina.

 

A special thanks to the staff and many friends at Plantation Estates for their love and care.  A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in the sanctuary at St. John’s Baptist Church, 300 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, North Carolina 28204 at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5th with Dr. Richard Kremer conducting the service.  The family will receive friends after the service in the Broach Fellowship Hall.  Internment in the church’s garden will be private.
