Mr. Hagler, 57 of Charlotte, passed away on March 29, 2010 after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Born on September 22, 1952, Derrel is survived by his mother and stepfather, Iris and Bill Chastain, father and stepmother, Arthur Lee and Nancy Hagler, daughter, Tiffany Hagler, Tiffany’s mother, Connie Butler, son, Briggs Hagler, Briggs’ mother, Leila Hagler, sisters, Regina McNair (David) and Kim Johnson (Marvin), brothers, Jason Chastain, Steve Mullis (Pam), Ricky Chastain (Trish), Randy Chastain, Ronnie Chastain (Jennifer), Robbie Chastain (Jane), loving girlfriend, Chris Hardin, devoted roommates, Don Hollifield and Ed Buckley, his close friend and mentor, Norris Funderburg, his fellow band members and many, many close friends and extended family whose lives were enriched by him.
Derrel was an inspiration to all who knew his love and enthusiasm for life. He could light up a room with his smile. His positive attitude was contagious and his wonderful sense of humor and good cheer made all who knew him happier.
Derrel was an accomplished musician, having played the drums from a very young age. Derrel performed in many bands throughout the years, most recently with his band, Highway 51.
Derrel’s legacy will live on in his children, whom he adored and of whom he was very proud. His musical talent will live on through Briggs, his strength through Tiffany.
Derrel was a loving father, son, brother and friend will be missed by many, and He would want us to remember the laughter.
A service to celebrate Derrel’s life will be held on Thursday, April 1, at 2:00 p.m. at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the Trinity Room of the church’s Family Life Center following the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
