Mrs. Hanks, 76, of Charlotte, NC died Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Carolinas
Medical Center.
Born September 30, 1932 in Florence, SC, Mrs. Mrs. Hanks was the daughter of the late Johnny and Marian Medders. She graduated as the Salutatorian of her High School class in Waycross GA and went on to Grady Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta,
GA Mrs. Hanks worked at Emory University Hospital for four years where she met her
husband, Jack B. Hanks who attended Emory Medical School. She continued to work in nursing throughout her life, primarily in nursing homes.
For many years, Hilda lived in Elberton, GA where she raised her sons, Jack Anthony
“Tony” Hanks and David Maxwell Hanks. Over the last 14 years, she lived in Charlotte
to be near her sons, Tony and David Hanks, her daughter-in-law, Belinda, and
grandsons, Winston, Jack and Luke Hanks.
She had a deep appreciation of the esthetic sense of the world and enjoyed painting,
music, theatre, and culture. She loved to travel and relished her time in Europe, Hawaii,
Mexico, and the Caribbean. To those who knew her, Hilda had a child-like appreciation
and excitement for all holidays. Cards and calls were always forwarded with time to
spare.
Mrs. Hanks was a member of Myers Park Baptist Church where she was a
member of the 5th Dimension Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her
parents, Johnny and Marian Medders, her husband, Jack B. Hanks, and her brother,
Ledford Medders.
Hilda is survived by sons, Tony and David Maxwell Hanks; daughter-in-law,
Belinda Hanks, sister Judy Marian Smith; brother, Donald Ashley Medders; and sister-in-
law, Martha Medders; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in GA, SC, and FL.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11a.m. Friday, February 13, 2009 at Myers
Park Baptist Church, The Reverend Dr. H. Stephen Shoemaker will officiate. A
graveside service will be held at 4:45 p.m. Friday at Elmhurst Cemetery in Elberton, GA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sunshine Fund, Myers Park Baptist
Church, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207-2582.
