Sol Jaffa, 82, of Charlotte, passed away on April, 8 2010, at Presbyterian Hospital.
The son of the late Blanche and Ben Jaffa Sr., Sol graduated from Charlotte’s Central High School, as well as the University of North Carolina and UNC Law School. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1950-52, Sol returned to Charlotte where he worked at Southern Five & Dime with his parents and twin brother, Ben Jaffa Jr. In 1958, the three founded Graham Investment Company and Jay Realty Corporation, which still operate today.
Sol was a lifelong member of Temple Israel, where he was named an Honorary Life President after holding positions including President of the Board of Trustees and Building Committee Chairman. He was also active in B’nai B’rith, where he served in multiple capacities including President of District 5. One of Sol’s passions was working with youth, and he served as President of the Cotswold Elementary School PTA, City Chairman of B’nai B’rith Youth Organization and Chairman of the Youth Committee of the Charlotte Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
Sol is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Janet Handler Jaffa; daughters, Wendy Rosen and husband Frank, Sheryl Bauer and husband Mike, and Dayle Fligel and husband David; and grandchildren, Josh Rosen, Brian Bauer, Kevin Bauer, Sidney Fligel, Lindsey Bauer and Erin Fligel. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Ben Jaffa Jr.
A funeral service will be held at Temple Israel, 4901 Providence Road, on, April, 9 2010 at 1:30 pm, followed by interment at the Hebrew Cemetery of Charlotte.
