MICHAEL ANTHONY MAGGIANO, JR.

JUNE 5, 1943 ~ APRIL 5, 2010

Michael Anthony Maggiano Jr., age 66, passed away after suffering three strokes over the past three months on Monday, April 5, 2010 at Presbyterian Hospital Main, in Harris Hospice.

Born June 5, 1943 in Warren, Ohio, Michael (Mickey) was the son of the late Michael Anthony Maggiano Sr. and Ruby Momulo Maggiano.  He was a graduate of Warren Harding High School where he was Captain of the basketball team and Student Council President.  Michael received a basketball scholarship to Ashland University where he earned his bachelor’s degree.  From there he furthered his education as a Graduate Assistant under Bill Fitch while earning his Masters degree from Bowling Green State University.

Michael began his career as a basketball coach and teacher.  He transitioned into the business world where he retired as a senior executive from Medical Mutual in Toledo, OH.

Michael was a devout Catholic and family man who attended daily mass.  He was a patriotic history buff, but probably most known for his love of golf.  His passion for golf took him around the US and to St. Andrews, Scotland playing on some of the most challenging courses.

Michael enjoyed five years of retirement in Charlotte, NC, where he was able to truly engage in his love of life with his grandchildren and much of his family nearby.  Vacations at the beach with family and golfing with friends were his favorite pastimes.

Michael is survived by his wife Ellie Maggiano, with whom he celebrated his 42nd anniversary on July 29, 2009; son Dominic and wife Arlene of Plano, TX; son Paul and wife Julia of Atlanta, GA; daughter Gina and husband Dr. Cary Fishburne of Charlotte, NC.  His family also includes his sister Martha and her husband Carl LaLonde of Warren, OH.  His grandchildren are Morgan and Michael of Plano, TX; Joshua, McKenzie and William of Atlanta, GA; and Matthew and Michael Fishburne of Charlotte, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Maggiano.

A mass to celebrate the life of Michael Maggiano will be held 3:00 Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Charlotte, NC.  His family will receive friends during a viewing at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the mass at the church.  A reception will follow after the mass.  Inurnment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Michael Maggiano to National Stroke Association, 9707 E Easter Lane Building B, Centennial, CO 80112, www.stroke.org, or a charity of your choice.
