William Grady Matheson, 85, born in Biltmore, NC, August 3, 1924, son of the late Dallas Grayson Matheson and Nora Towe Matheson, died July 20, 2010 in Charlotte, NC.
Mr. Matheson graduated from Ceicil’s Business College in Asheville, NC and was employed by Fowler and Pound Moore Office Supplies of Charlotte for 38 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, a Good Conduct Medal, a WWII Victory Ribbon and an American Theater Ribbon. He was a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church.
His interest in history and travel took him to Europe, Canada and all states except Hawaii.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene Sawyer Matheson, of Charlotte; sons, William Mark Matheson, and wife Marcel, of Midlothian, VA, Dean Sawyer Matheson, and wife Portia, of Arcata, CA and daughter, Jann Matheson Burnette, and husband Kerry, of Waxhaw, NC. Grandchildren include, Samantha Burnette, Jeremy Burnette, and wife Tiffany, Brittany Matheson, Daniel Matheson, Emily Matheson and step-grandson, Sean Stade. He has two great-grandchildren, Noah and Kayla Burnette and two step-great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Bradley Stade. He was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers with one surviving sister, Margaret Bryd Metcalf and husband Don, of Black Mountain, NC
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 pm, Friday, July 23, 2010 in the Chapel of J.B. Tallent Funeral Service with the Reverend Glenn Gunter officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:15 to 2:45 pm prior to the service. A private family burial will be held in Sharon Memorial Park.
