Mrs. McAlister, 78, of Charlotte NC, died peacefully at home on May 2, 2010. She was born in Charlotte NC on June 17, 1931, daughter of the late Harrison Rowland McCray and Sarah Black McCray. She attended Charlotte city schools, Queens College, and graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, in 1953. She is survived by her husband, John W. McAlister, Jr., a son, Peter Vanstory, Jr. of Ocean View, Hawaii, a daughter, Leigh Vanstory Poe and husband Tom Poe of Charlotte, a granddaughter Caroline McCray Poe; her brother Harrison R. McCray, Jr. and wife, Audrey, and their three children. In addition, she leaves five step-children, Betsy McAlister Groves and husband Tim Groves of Cambridge, MA, Margaret McAlister of Homestead, FL, Sally McAlister Marszalek and husband Fred, of Smithfield, RI, John W. McAlister III of Charlotte, and the late Cynthia McAlister. Eugenia was a devoted and much-loved grandparent to ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
She was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, serving the congregation in many capacities for over 60 years. Eugenia’s deep faith and courageous spirit were an inspiration to all of her family and friends.
Visitation will be at The Cypress of Charlotte, 3442 Cypress Club Drive, from 4:30-6:30 PM on Monday, May 3rd. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, on Tuesday May 4 at 2:00 PM, with a reception following the service.
The family expresses gratitude to the staff of Presbyterian Hospice, the Presbyterian Cancer Center, and the caregivers at The Cypress.
