Obituaries

 Mrs. McMahon, 94, of Charlotte, entered the gates of Heaven on January 27, 2010. She died peacefully surrounded by her children.

Born in Jersey City, New Jersey on May 15, 1915, Mary was the daughter of the late Katherine Monahan Scherr and Peter Scherr and was one of six children. Mary was raised in Jersey City where she later met and married Philip Francis McMahon, her husband of 51 years. They retired to Charlotte in 1983 to be near their children and grandchildren. Mary was an active member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church for more than 25 years, where she enjoyed being a member of the OWLS. She will always be remembered for her strong faith in God and her daily attendance at Mass for many years.

GG, as she was lovingly called by her grandchildren, will be missed for so many things but most of all her quick wit. She had a great sense of humor and the wonderful ability to always make everyone laugh. Mary loved spending time with her family, especially “Girls Week” at the beach every year.

Mrs. McMahon was predeceased by her husband, Philip, in 1988. She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Lou Fernan, husband, Robert, and Phyllis McArdle, husband, Edward, and 4 grandchildren, Colleen Dest, husband, Thomas, Melissa Holland, Peter McArdle, wife, Sally and Daniel McArdle, and wife, Millie. Mary was also blessed with 8 great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Megan, Jack, Molly, Kevin, Kate, Jane, and Lucy, all of Charlotte.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the loving staff at Carmel Hills.

The family will receive friends on Monday, February 1, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church at 10:00 A.M. followed by a Mass, which will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M.
