Mrs. Wallace, 97, of Charlotte, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 28, with her family by her side at her residence, The Haven at Carolina Place.
Born on May 16, 1911, in Cluster Springs, Virginia, Harriet was the daughter of the late Rufus Own and Belle Ficklin Owen. She attended William & Mary Extension in Richmond, Virginia and worked for 15 years at Virginia Electric & Power Company in both Richmond and Fredericksburg, Virginia.
She and the late Robert Marsden Wallace were married on January 1, 1948, in Richmond, Virginia. They began their family in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where Dr. Wallace was a Professor of English at the University of Alabama. In 1963, the family moved to Charlotte when Dr. Wallace was hired to be the Chair of the English Department of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Harriet is survived by three daughters, Marsden Sale and her husband, Ed, of Charlotte, Mandy Wallace and her spouse, Deb Self, of Oakland, California, and Jane Gallardo and her husband, Scott, of San Francisco; four grandchildren, Henry and Amanda Sale of Charlotte, and Aria and Robert Gallardo of San Francisco.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Haven and Hospice for their kindness and wonderful care.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, May 9, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 1510 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204. The family will receive friends after the service.
