Mr. Warstler, 83, of Charlotte, NC, died of cancer at his residence on July 2, 2009. He was born August 3, 1925, to Harold “Rabbit” Warstler and Grace Mohler Warstler in North Canton, Ohio.
John was the son of Rabbit Warstler, a major league baseball player during the 1930’s, and as a young man he was a bat boy for various major league teams.
He attended Yale University and was Captain of the Yale basketball team. After graduating in 1947, he worked as an engineer for the Hoover Company until called to serve as a Naval Officer in the Korean War.
In the mid 1950’s, Mr. Warstler joined IBM as a salesman retiring over 35 years later after various management and sales positions. Notably during his career in Federal Government sales, he was instrumental in selling and delivering the air traffic control modernization system to the FAA in the 1980’s.
John was a devoted husband to Rose Marie Warstler for 58 years.
Along with his wife, Rose, John is survived by his children, Janet Warstler Fleegal (Steve) of Memphis, TN; Amy Warstler David (Scott) of Denver, CO; Douglas John Warstler (Beth) of Myrtle Beach, SC; and Michael John Warstler (Tammy) of Charlotte, NC; 8 grandchildren, Clayton Fleegal; Katie and Trevor David; Amanda, Douglas and Robert Warstler; Jane Grace and Michael William Warstler; and sisters, Virginia McCallum and Jeanne Kettelhut.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Charlotte on Monday, July 6, at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
