WENDELL WAYNE WOOD
"Woody"

 October 9, 1920 ~ ~ February 8, 2010

Mr. Wood, 89, of Charlotte, NC, died February 8, 2010. He was born in Kokomo, Indiana, the son of the late Mason and Mable Wood. “Woody” as he was called by his many friends, spent his youth years in Elwood, Indiana. Following World War II, he attended UNC Chapel Hill where he became an avid lifelong fan.

Following his graduation from the University, he took up residence in Charlotte and membership in the First Presbyterian Church of this city at which church he was an active volunteer. For 60 years he was an elder and served as the Sunday School Superintendent. Additionally, he was a Sunday greeter at the church door, the “Easter Bunny” at the annual Easter Egg Hunt and more than once took the role of Santa Claus at the church party. To his myriad of friends he was known as the “mayor of Providence Road Sundries” and “Dilworth Billiards”. Mr. Wood received WBT’s prestigious Jefferson Award for his activity with the Uptown Sandwich Kitchen for the Homeless in 1986 and for many years coached baseball in the Little League program.

During World War II “Woody” was a bomber pilot of B26 planes and flew fifty plus missions over Europe. Mr. Wood was retired from Celanese Corporation. In addition to his wife, Rebecca Patton Wood and daughter, Jane Wood Richey, survivors are a sister, Elsie Blaising, and brothers, Dick and Joe.

The service will be at 2:00 pm, Thursday, February 11, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church followed by a visitation. Additionally, there will be a later visitation at Sharon Towers.

Memorials may be sent as desired to First Presbyterian Church, The Uptown Sandwich Kitchen, Friendship Trays or services of choice.
