Obituary for Dorothy Ellis Harloe

Dorothy Ellis Harloe died peacefully on October 26, 2018.
A childhood resident of West Virginia, Dottie attended Concord College and the University of Virginia. While at UVA, she channeled her love of theater by acting in several amateur stage productions. She was the first President of the Cavalier Ladies, a group supporting the wives of UVA students. She also took flying lessons-a bold thing in the 40's. During World War II, she worked with polio patients and with the Red Cross.
Dottie moved with her young family to Charlotte in 1948 and was an exemplary mother always supporting swim meets, scout troops and all manner of sports and lessons while also teaching Sunday School at Myers Park Presbyterian Church where she was a member until her death. She also found time to lead the Mecklenburg Medical Society Auxillary in encouraging testing for diabetes and heart disease.
Dottie's chief accomplishment was the use of her enormous creative talents as an Assistant Manager and Social Director at the Charlotte Country Club for over 25 years. In this role, she created fabulous events for debutants, dance clubs, brides and visiting dignitaries. Her skills at planning parties and weddings are legendary.
After retirement, she volunteered in the Myers Park Presbyterian Church office and also planned educational and fun trips for church seniors. The trips included sites all over the region and were very popular events.
In 2004, she moved to Southminster Retirement Community where she continued her creative life with crafts and shared her love of books with everyone. While there, she was lucky to meet a wonderful lady, Carol Horton, who became a family friend and helped care for her in her final years. The family is also grateful for the physicians and staff who have cared for her so well for the last year.
Dottie is survived by a daughter, Claudette Harloe Dalton, M.D. of Earlysville, Virginia and a son, John P. Harloe, Jr. and his wife, Patricia Albritton Harloe of Dallas, Texas. There are four grandchildren: Gordon Tucker Dalton of Roseland, Virginia; John P. Harloe, III, PhD and his wife Nell of Dallas, Texas; Shepherd Nash Harloe and his fiance, Erin O'Keefe of Pacifica, California and Nancy McKay Harloe Murphy and her husband, Gunn from Greenville, SC. Also, two great grandsons: Dean Horace Dalton-known as "Huck"- and Gunn Murphy, IV.
Funeral services will be private and a memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests no flowers but encourages donations to the Southminster Foundation at 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC, 28210 or to Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte, NC, 28207.
