Obituary for Peggy Wentz Crawford

Peggy Wentz Crawford entered her eternal life on March 19, 2018. She was born July 11, 1933 in Charlotte, NC where she spent her entire life. Her parents, Margaret and Mack Wentz, were also native Charlotteans and preceded her in death in 1975 and 1967 respectively. Peggy spent her entire career in mortgage banking. She began as a teller with Home Federal Savings & Loan in uptown Charlotte, retiring after 25 years. She went on to work for NC Federal and later Merrill Lynch Mortgage. She was known and loved by her clients and was considered a loan “counselor” as much as a loan officer. She often counseled her clients in an effort to support their long term financial security. She developed a wide network of real estate professionals who she worked with and respected.
She was known to all her grands as “Maw Maw Piggy”, a name earned from her first grandchild who could not properly pronounce Peggy. Her two sons gave her seven grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. She had loving relationships with every one of them and enjoyed them during every visit and every family gathering. During her final days, her caregivers commented many times about how fortunate she was to have such a loving family to visit and attend to her.
Being a strong and consistently devoted Christian woman, her faith was an integral part of her life. She shared her faith with many, letting them know how God had blessed her and brought her from an impoverished childhood to become a mortgage executive with only a high school education. She was incredibly proud of her life journey and saw it all as a divine benefit which humbled her greatly.
Other than her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Frank Crawford, Sr. He was the true love of her life. She is survived by her sons Frank, Jr. and Fred along with her 20 grand and great-grandchildren. Her two “adopted” daughters, Ellen Buening and Kathy Bowen, were also an integral part of her life. She is also survived by her two sisters, JoAnn Hamrick and Linda Johnson. Beyond those, she had a wide network of friends who she left behind until they meet again.
A service to celebrate the life of Peggy Wentz Crawford will take place on Friday, March 23rd at 12 noon at J.B. Tallent Funeral Service, 1937 Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, 28205. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends at 11am. Those who are able to attend her celebration are asked to wear something purple in honor of Peggy.
Also, rather than flowers, the family asks that those wishing to donate in her memory do so to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, PO Box 470408, Charlotte, 28247.
