Obituary for Vance Bacon Martin

Vance Bacon Martin went to his eternal reward on May 21, 2018. The son of Jesse Haywood and Velma Bacon Martin, he was born on February 18, 1923 and grew up with a farming heritage in Hillsborough, NC. He developed a love of electricity in 1936 when he was 13 years old when Duke Power Company began building power lines near his farm. He attended Duke University where he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He served in the Navy, taught electrical engineering at Duke University, and continued his passion for electricity with employment at Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation, and Duke Power, where he retired in 1988 in Charlotte, NC. He married Lila Mae Lasley, from Mebane, NC in 1957, where they started their family in Hillsborough and later moved to Charlotte with Vance's career move at Duke Power. They had a daughter, Janet, and 40 years together prior to Lila Mae's passing from a long illness. He later connected with Colleen Ross, a childhood friend, and they were married in 1998 and lived in Burlington, NC. His hobbies included serving his church, Bible studies, gardening, singing and enjoying classical music, spending time with family, and solving electrical problems. Vance is survived by Ted Martin, half-brother, Janet Martin Bridges, daughter, and Elizabeth (Beth) Martin Bridges and Thomas (Tommy) Martin Bridges, grandchildren, and Kara Jeanne-Phillips Bridges, Tommy's wife. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister Edrie Martin Page, his brother Aubrey Melzin Martin, and half-sister Patricia Reeves. Vance celebrated his 95th birthday recently which provided an opportunity to reflect on his Christian example, devotion to his family and friends, loving servant attribute as a caregiver, and a remarkable, yet humble, impact with his life.
The service to remember and celebrate his life will be on Friday, May 25th at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1126 W Webb Avenue, Burlington. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will be private at Evergreen Cemetery in Charlotte. Online condolences may be shared through www.tallentfuneralservice.com.
Memorial donations may be made to: St. Mary's Chapel, PO Box 1454, Hillsborough, NC 27278. This beautiful chapel, a registered historical landmark, dates back to 1859 and upon Vance's return from service in the Navy, was a project of his to establish annual homecoming events and provide funds for on-going upkeep and restoration. The chapel held its 65th homecoming service in September 2017.
