Obituary for Martha "Maxine" Delauder Stine Doak Whiteman

Maxine Whiteman, aged 100, died peacefully at home on May 27, 2018. She was born January 3, 1918 in Benevola, Maryland, the youngest child of Frank Eli Delauder and Mary Iola Snyder. Maxine’s first marriage to Robert Stine ended in divorce. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Doak and husband Roy Whiteman.
Maxine always enjoyed working with the public and was a woman of incredible strength of will. As manager of The Holly Shop, a woman’s clothing store in Cumberland, Maryland, she proudly prepared window displays, managed staff and inventory and kept the books. She is fondly remembered in Cumberland for giving many young women their first jobs. After 13 years managing The Holly Shop, Maxine worked as credit manager of Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, MD for 12 years. Upon relocating to Charlotte, NC, she became the Patient Accounts Collection Manager for First Charlotte Physicians where she proudly supported Dr. Jimmie Adcock until her retirement in 1993 at the age of 75. When asked what she would have done differently in her life, Maxine replied, “I would have worked longer!” In addition to her career, Maxine served as President of the Cumberland, MD chapter of Soroptimist Club International. She was also dedicated to SouthPark Christian Church of which she was a founding member.
Maxine cherished her family and friends. She is survived by her devoted son, Brent Stine and his wife Shawn, loving daughters-in law Janie Stine and Barbara Stine, grandsons Mark Stine (Joanne), Matthew Stine (Justine), and Todd Stine (Deborah) as well as six great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Briana, Andrew, Elizabeth, Emily and Addison Stine. In addition, Maxine leaves behind her adored nieces and nephews as well as her devoted Sardis Forest neighbors, Holly and Kevin Murchie and Judy Lucas. Maxine was preceded in death by her beloved son Darrell Stine.
The family would like to thank Maxine and Roy’s devoted caregivers, especially Lisa and Lesley from Hospice & Palliative Care of the Charlotte Region, for their loving kindness and assistance over the past several months. We believe she called all of you “Mom” because you treated her with a Mother’s loving touch.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 2, 2018 at 11:00 am at SouthPark Christian Church, 6650 Park South Drive, Charlotte, NC 28210. In lieu of flowers, Maxine requested that donations be made in her memory to SouthPark Christian Church or Hospice & Palliative Care – Charlotte Region (
